INTRODUCTION
Peking University First Hospital (also called “Beida” Hospital) founded in 1915, it is a large comprehensive tertiary hospital integrating medical services with teaching, research and preventive medicine. It is the Central Government Designated Hospital.

Beida Hospital is the first-batch clinical medical school. It was initially the affiliated clinic of Beijing Medical School approved by the Ministry of Education of the Republic of China. In 1946, it became a part of Peking University (also called Beida) and was renamed Beida Hospital. It didn’t get current name Peking University First Hospital until the year 2000 when Beijing Medical University and Peking University integrated after several separation and combination. In 2008, it became Central Government Designated Hospital.

In the past century, our hospital established the first Pediatrics Teaching and Research Office (1929), the first Urology Department (1946), the major of Nephrology (1950), the first Cardiovascular Ward in general hospital (1950s), and Pediatric Neurology (1961) in China. We are also in the leading position among domestic colleagues on the performance of intravenous anesthesia (1951), surgical treatment of congenital heart diseases (1950s), kidney transplantation (1960), artificial crystal embedding (1983), coronary intervention (1986), thoracoscopic surgery (1992), self-blood callback (1997), mini-incision lung transplantation (2005) and percutaneous ventricular reconstruction (2013), and so on. Therefore, Peking University First Hospital has made an outstanding contribution to Chinese medical industry.

Peking University First Hospital has 36 clinical departments, 11 technological departments, 1 research department, 4 research institutes, totally 59 wards and 1805 opening beds. Averagely 10,000 outpatients are treated in this hospital per day. Over 100,000 patients are admitted, with about 40,000 operations completed per year. The hospital has over 3600 full time employees, including about 250 with a professional title of professor equivalent, over 300 with a professional title of associate professor equivalent. Prof. Guo Yinglu of Urology Department in our hospital was honored as an academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering in 1999, which is a national and independent organization, composed of elected members with the highest honor in the community of engineering and technological sciences of the nation.

Our hospital enjoys a reputation of complete disciplines and high-leveled general diagnosis and treatment. We have a National Clinical Medical Research Center. Totally 19 specialties of our hospital were admitted in the National Clinical Key Specialty Construction Program (18 key specialties and 1 key specialty lab). The hospital has several peak and plateau disciplines, including 12 National Key Disciplines and 1 National Drug Clinical Trial Institution. As a Class A insurance hospital, we are providing medical security services to 20 million Beijing citizens who enjoys basic medical insurance. At the same time, the hospital is responsible for the medical care of 60,000 persons at government expense and the health care of one eighth of the senior government officials. Among all the outpatients of our hospitals, one third of them are patients with stubborn diseases coming from all over the country.

As Peking University’s affiliated hospital who has the longest history, our hospital has trained over 3300 undergraduates and over 3800 graduates since 1977, including about 1900 students with master degree, about 1800 students with doctor degree and over 70 post-doctoral students. At present, the hospital has an enrollment of more than 300 students covered by eight year doctoral program, about 630 master program students, and about 400 nursing school undergraduates. In addition, our hospital is responsible for the CME of about 20,000 persons annually.

Our scientific research has been in the leading position in China for many years. In the past five years, the hospital has been approved a total of nearly 1,500 programs in terms of national, provincial, municipal, school-level projects and horizontal subjects, as well as clinical trials, with a funding of approximately 1.05 billion yuan. More than 5,000 papers have been published, and more than 2,000 papers have been included in SCI (Science Citation Index), some of which have been published in international journals including New Engl J Med, Lancet, Blood, Am J Hum Genet, etc. We have won more than 50 scientific and technological achievement awards from the State, the Ministry of Education, Beijing Municipality, and the Chinese Medical Association, including 22 national and ministerial-level awards.

Forging ahead in the New Era, Peking University First Hospital People will carry forward the lofty professional spirit and the great anti-epidemic spirit，and word hard with noble medical ethics, superb medical skills, and rigorous medical standards. With a hundred years of history and fruitful achievements, in front of the mission and responsibility in the New Era, Peking University First Hospital People will continue to inherit the core values of "Inspire Virtue and Revere the Dao", pursue the vision "To be the Benchmark for Medical Services", and carry forward the humanistic connotation of " Loving Care for Life". On the road to realize the great revival of the Chinese dream, we hold the dream of being “a national medical base and a world-class academic hospital”, based on the action plan “Educating people with high moral standards as our duty, Doing academic researches for the future”. We will focus on academic competence and create a city medical axis: with the Central Campus accomplishing national assignment in the central point, Miyun Campus providing medical care in the north end and Daxing Campus developing from an international perspective in the south end. We will stay true to the original aspiration of "a century of accumulation and hard work" and start the new journey of "three decades of dream building in the New Era."
