General Hospital of Ningxia Medical University, named as Ningxia Province Hospital as its precursor, was initially built by Ningxia Health & Test Dept. (former Health Dept. of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region) in the year of 1935. Since then, it has been renamed as People’s Hospital of Ningxia Province in 1951, as 2^nd People’s Hospital of Gansu Province in 1954, as People’s Hospital of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region1n 1958, as 1^st People’s Hospital of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region in 1962, as The Affiliated Hospital of Ningxia Medical College in 1973, as The Affiliated Hospital of Ningxia Medical University in 2008 and as the General Hospital of Ningxia Medical University in 2010.

     With the constant developments and innovations in the past 80 years, the hospital has been upgraded in to a comprehensive Grade-three, Class-A Hospital with multi-functions in medical treatment, education, scientific research, examination and training, etc. At present, the hospital covers the total area of 165,480m², and has the construction area of 265,485m². It also has three branch hospitals as Cardio-cerebrovascular Disease Hospital, Tumor Hospital and Stomatology Hospital. The Hospital Group of General Hospital was established in 2012, consisting of 34 member hospitals. The General Hospital has 3684 open beds, 53 clinical departments, and 12 medical technique divisions, the whole-year number of the patients treated in the hospital in 2020 was up to 2.6079 million person-time, 142,200 person-time discharged and 53,100 operations. The average length of hospitalization comes to 8.04 days.

The hospital has 5967 staff, including 5024 health professionals and technique personnel, out of whom, there are 1285 with senior professional titles, 136 with doctors’ degrees, 1201 with masters’ degrees. 2 people have been awarded “Mid-aged & Young Experts with Outstanding Contributions of Health Ministry”, 15 persons enjoy Special National Government Allowance and 19 persons enjoy Special Government Allowance of the Autonomous Region. One person has won the “China Youth Sci-tech Prize” and 3 won the “Autonomous Region Youth Sci-tech Prize”; 6 people “the Talents in Ningxia” of the Autonomous Region. 13 has gained the title of “Famous Doctors of the Autonomous Region” and 3 has gained the title of “Famous Doctors of the Yinchuan City”. 6 people has been selected into “313 Talent Project”— “Nation’s Hundred, Thousand & Ten Thousand Talent Project”. 19 people have been selected into the "Ningxia Young Sci-tech Talents Supporting Project" and 38 won the “Outstanding Young Talents in the Autonomous Region”. Since 2018, it has been approved to build 6 talent highland in the health and medical industry of the Autonomous Region.

Nowadays, the hospital has ICU, Cardiovascular Medicine, Neurosurgery, Cardiovascular Surgery. Respiratory & Critical Care Medicine, General Surgery, Emergency Dept. and Oncology Dept. approved as the 8 national clinical key discipline construction items; the cardiovascular medicine, neurological medicine and neurosurgery as the 3 advantageous specialties of the Autonomous Region. Meanwhile, Neurology, Clinical Laboratory Diagnostics and General Surgery are the 3 advantageous disciplines of the Region. The Orthopedics is the key discipline of the Region.

At present, the hospital has already established some scientific research platforms, such as the Scientific Research Dept. of Medical Experimental Center, Surgery Research Section, Clinical Medicine Research Section, Bio-chip Ningxia Subcenter of Beijing National Engineering Research Center, Ningxia Human Stem Cell Research Institute, Sperm Bank and other scientific research and professional research platform. The hospital has 10 clinical medical research centers of Ningxia Autonomous Region for cardiovascular diseases and 9 innovation teams of Ningxia Autonomous Region for neurology prevention and treatment research. In 2020, it was approved as Ningxia Medical 3D Printing Engineering Technology Research Center, Ningxia Nervous System Disease Diagnosis and Treatment Engineering Technology Research Center, Ningxia Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine Clinical Application Research Key Laboratory, Basic and Clinical Research Innovation Team for bone and joint diseases. The Medical Laboratory Center has been approved by ISO15189 of the National accreditation Committee.

The hospital offers three levels of teaching for the postgraduates, undergraduates and 3-year program students. There are 19 teaching departments in the hospital and the hospital is responsible for teaching tasks of 21 specialties for undergraduates, among which, clinical medicine is national-leveled advantageous specialty. What is more, the hospital has been authorized as the doctoral degree first- grade conferring spot and master degrees first-grade conferring spot. At present, there are 2 national first-class specialties, one national characteristic specialty, 3 first-class specialties at the Autonomous Region level, 4 advantageous characteristic specialties at the Autonomous Region level. One key specialty group at the Autonomous Region level, 2 first-class teaching and research offices at the Autonomous Region level, 10 first-class courses at the Autonomous Region level, and 8 excellent courses at the Autonomous Region level. Besides, there are 4 provincial-leveled teaching teams. In the 4^th round national discipline evaluation, the clinical medicine has been ranked as C+. Besides, Clinical medicine ESI ranks 0.57% globally, ranking among the top 1% globally for four consecutive years.

With the help of the Communist Party members, cadres and staff, the hospital has been successively awarded as “Demonstration Hospital of Advance Booking service, Reasonable Allocate Resources” in national improving medical services, and gained “Medical Poverty Alleviation Contribution Award”, “the Excellence Award of Chinese Hospital Quality Management (Medicine 2019)”, “Outstanding High Quality Nursing Care Hospital”, “National Humanities Love Hospital”, “National Humanities Love Department”. Many people of the hospital have been awarded “National Advanced Worker”, “National Outstanding Female Workers”, “Labor Medal of Autonomous Region”, “Outstanding Communist Party Member”, “Advanced Individual in Fighting Against Epidemic” and other national and regional commendations. The hospital ranked 76^th in the first national performance assessment of Grade-three, Class-A public hospitals, with grade A+. Ranked 94^th in Alibi China Hospital list. It ranked 5^th in the comprehensive strength of hospitals in Northwest China in 2019 by Hospital Management Institute of Fudan University, and 23 disciplines ranked top 5 in the specialty reputation of hospitals in Northwest China in 2019.
