Used in microbiological culture media to aid in isolation of gram-negative microorganisms. It is used as an active component in cosmetic products to destroy adipocytes (fat cells). It is also used as an excipient to improve drug bioavailability (solubility/permeation). In addition, it is used in medical devices and as an ionic detergent for protein purification, used in production of vaccines, other biologics and biomedical implants.
