The first high-level talk of Hongqiao International Economic Forum at the upcoming 2021 CIIE offers opportunities for member enterprises to communicate with peers and governments

Following the country's pledge to achieve net-zero carbon, a special dialogue on coping with climate change and seeking green and sustainable development was held in Qingpu district, Shanghai on Thursday.

The event was held by the secretariat of the Hongqiao International Economic Forum and the forum's research center. The Hongqiao International Economic Forum is an important part of the annual China International Import Expo.

Centered on green and low-carbon development, the event's participants, including enterprise members of the Hongqiao forum, industry experts and government officials, discussed a range of pressing issues.

The world has reached a consensus on the importance of pushing social and economic transitions toward green and low-carbon economies. China has vowed to peak its carbon dioxide emissions by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. And to support this great undertaking, the country has also made solid progress on boosting green technology and green financial development.

Climate change and environmental governance have been important concerns across the world, and developing green and low-carbon has become a priority. China's ambition to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060 demonstrates the country's sense of responsibility for the international community. It also sets a higher bar for future development, said Vice-Minister of Commerce Wang Bingnan, who is also the director-general of the CIIE Bureau.

Wang also called on enhanced cooperation among various sectors around the world to support the sustainable development.

The CIIE has been advocating for the concept of green, environmental protection and sustainability, which echoes the green development concept of Bank of China, said Lin Jingzhen, vice-president of Bank of China.

As the strategic partner of CIIE, Bank of China will continue to support the expo, boost green finance and contribute to sustainable development of China, Lin added.

The event was the first high-level dialogue of the fourth Hongqiao International Economic Forum of CIIE, which is scheduled to be held in Shanghai this November. It aims to build an offline communication platform for enterprises and create an opportunity for enterprises to communicate with government departments and obtain profound interpretation for the latest policies, according to organizers.

At the event, Xia Guang, former National Supervise Commissioner for Ecological and Environmental Protection of Ministry of Ecology and Environment and Li Jin, deputy general manager of the Shanghai Environment and Energy Exchange delivered keynote speeches on the green development during the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-25) and enterprise carbon neutrality alliance respectively.

Business leaders from Hongqiao forum's member enterprises also shared their experience of green development at the event.
