Hello! My name is Thomas J. Sargent. I'm an economist, and in a short video, I want to thank the Ministry of Commerce of China and Renmin University of China (a very distinguished university) for inviting me to attend the 8th Hongqiao International Economic Forum. Forgive me for my pronunciation; it's not good in English, and it's even less proficient in Chinese, so I apologize.
Specifically, for the session on open trade and security-based development, these are two subjects that are very important today, and they're very important to me as an economic scientist who tries to study the world economy, the national economy of China, or the United States. Like many—I would say most—economists throughout the world, I believe in free trade. I don't like barriers to trade of any kind; I like the free flow of ideas.
One thing I do: I engage in open, contribute to and benefit from open-source computing, where you know we share and distribute code worldwide. I have very good friends and co-authors, co-researchers in China who teach me things, and we share ideas and share code. You can't put a tariff on them because you know a lot of them involve either the use, application, or sometimes even extension of AI to problems in information processing.
We use statistics to help us study how economies are developing and how we can make better decisions, both for individual firms and various social organizations designed to help public welfare. So I'm really looking forward to this conference. I think the way we promote security across the internet and security for our economies is to cooperate and to share. I want to listen more than talk and I'm really looking forward to it.
Again, I appreciate the Ministry of Commerce and Renmin University for inviting me. It's a true honor. Thank you very much.
