On November 5, 2022, the Parallel Session on Promoting Industry High-quality Development and Building a Health Community of Shared Future for Mankind of the 5th Hongqiao International Economic Forum (Hongqiao Forum) in Shanghai. The parallel session was hosted by the Ministry of Commerce and co-organized by the Secretariat of the Hongqiao International Economic Forum and Economic Information Daily (Xinhua News Agency Health Platform).

In the parallel session, the participants explored how to promote the high-quality development of the medical and healthcare industry and create cross-sectoral cooperation opportunities, exchanged experiences and made suggestions on innovation-led internationalization of Chinese medicine and international cooperation in the field of biomedicine. Representatives from industry business associations and renowned enterprises in the pharmaceutical field attended the event. The parallel session was hosted by Zhou Liang, Secretary of the Party Committee and Chief Editor of the Economic Information Daily of Xinhua News Agency.

Sun Chenghai, Secretary of the Party Committee and Deputy Director of the China International Import Expo Bureau and Chairman of the National Convention and Exhibition Center (Shanghai) Co., Ltd., stressed that at the CIIE, the “exhibition” and “conference” are combined to comprehensively promote the construction of a healthy China, and that the Enterprise Business Exhibition, driven by the large domestic market, includes a medical equipment and medical care exhibition area, as well as special areas for public health and pandemic prevention, rehabilitation and elderly care, etc., and introduces new products, technologies and services to benefit people’s health. The Hongqiao Forum continues to focus on the health economy, and we hope that everyone will work together to contribute more “Hongqiao wisdom” to building a health community of shared future for mankind.

Measures can be taken to promote continuous innovation in biomedicine and achieve high-quality development of the industry by encouraging original R&D and the marketing of drugs with better clinical value, accelerating the establishment of a multi-level medical insurance system, increasing investment in basic research and expanding international cooperation in biomedicine.

Avram Hershko, Nobel Laureate in Chemistry in 2004, Academician of the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities and Foreign Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, believes that basic research is the core foundation of all essential innovations in the pharmaceutical industry. The dramatic improvements in human health over the last 50 years have been attributed to immense innovations in the field of the pharmaceutical industry, biotechnology and biomedical instrumentation, as well as to major discoveries based on basic biomedical science. High-quality basic research is required to achieve original innovations.

Zhang Boli, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and Honorary President of Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, pointed out that the innovation-driven development strategy should be implemented to establish the foundation for the development of Chinese medicine, which is “inheriting the essence and keeping the tradition and seeking innovation”. Modernization of TCM shall be integrated with modern technology, the “TCM thinking+originality+modern technology+transformation” pattern should be upheld, and industrial development should be driven by innovation.

Lin Guoqiang, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Director of the Innovation Research Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine at Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, believes that efficient and organized scientific research should be strengthened to promote high-level research, such as the development of alternatives to endangered and precious Chinese herbs. We should also draw on the joint research of other disciplines, such as chemistry, biology and medicine, to continuously increase the recognition of traditional Chinese medicine in the global market.

On the forum, we also released the first-ever Survey Report on Health Perceptions of Urban Youth Groups in China (2022), which was jointly launched by Xinhua News Agency Health Platform and the School of Sociology and Population Studies of Renmin University of China, aiming to understand the status-quo and development trend of the health level of the new generation of urban youth groups and further promote the whole society to pay more attention to the health of youth groups.
