On the afternoon of November 5, 2022, the Ministry of Commerce, the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission (SASAC) of the State Council and the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) co-hosted a parallel session on “Acting on the Global Development Initiative to Build World-class Enterprises” at the 5th Hongqiao International Economic Forum (Hongqiao Forum) at the National Convention and Exhibition Center (Shanghai). Peng Huagang, member of the Party Committee and Secretary-General of the State Council SASAC, and Sanda Ojiambo, Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations and Director-General of the UN Global Compact, attended the forum and delivered speeches.

Peng Huagang, member of the Party Committee and Secretary-General of the State Council SASAC, said that the Chinese government and Chinese enterprises uphold the concept of common interests and sustainable development, always adhere to openness and cooperation, actively implement global development initiatives and the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and make positive contributions to building a community of shared future for humankind in the process of accelerating the development of world-class enterprises.

Sanda Ojiambo, Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations and Director-General of the UN Global Compact, pointed out that the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is experiencing an unprecedented global crisis that requires large-scale cooperation through global development initiatives. Some 600 companies in China have already joined the UN Global Compact. She called on more Chinese companies to join the UN Global Compact and work together to drive positive change, promote business innovation and strengthen international cooperation to create a more inclusive, equitable and sustainable future.

Wang Ping, Vice President of the Red Cross Society of China; Lei Mingshan, Chairman of China Three Gorges Project Corporation Co., Ltd. (online); Shi Daocheng, CEO of Rio Tinto Group (online); Wan Min, Chairman of China COSCO Shipping Group Co., Ltd. (online); and Roberto Azevêdo, Executive Vice President and Chief Group Affairs Officer of PepsiCo and Chairman of the PepsiCo Foundation (online) delivered keynote speeches on how to practice global development initiatives and develop world-class enterprises.

In the panel discussion, Yao Yang, Dean of the National School of Development and Executive Dean of the Institute of South-South Cooperation and Development of Peking University (online), Mike Romain, Chairman and CEO of 3M (online), Liu Jingzhen, Chairman of China National Pharmaceutical Group Corporation, John Edwards, Her Majesty‘s Trade Commissioner for China, Zhao Dong, Chairman of Xiamen Airlines Limited, Niels B. Christiansen, CEO and President of the LEGO Group (online), Zheng Yang, Chairman of Shanghai Pudong Development Bank, Li Wenxue, Co-founder and Vice President of LONGi Green Energy Technology Co., Ltd., and other guests held dialogues and discussions on the importance of global development initiatives, as well as enterprises implementing the Global Development Initiative, promoting win-win cooperation, and accelerating the realization of sustainable development goals.

During the parallel session, the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council released the Research Report on Overseas Social Responsibility of Central Enterprises (2022) and launched the initiative of “Acting on the Global Development Initiative to Build World-class Enterprises”. The United Nations Global Compact released the Corporate Climate Target Setting, Action and Global Collaboration Towards a Net-zero Future - Accelerate 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda through Global Development Initiative.
