Average wages continue to rise steadily in 2020 despite the pandemic Release date: 2021-05-20 Source:Global Times
The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) released data reporting the average wages in various industries in China in 2020, showing the average wage of urban workers continued to increase.
According to the data, the average annual income of employees in urban non-private units stood at 97,379 yuan ($15,125) in 2020, which represents a real growth of 5.2 percent year-on-year, while for employees in urban private units was 57,727 yuan ($8,966) in 2020, up 5.3 percent.
The information technology industry registered the highest average wage in both urban non-private units and urban private units which reached 177, 544 yuan ($27,576) and 101,281 yuan ($15,731) respectively.
The average wages in the communications, software development and information technology services industries increased by 10 percent or 0.7 percentage points more than the previous year driven by the high demand for online services such as education and remote medical consultation due to the pandemic. This lead to the rapid growth of average wages in the online service industry according to an analysis by Meng Canwen, Deputy Chief of the Population and Employment Statistics Bureau.
