The Peninsula Hotels makes a deliberate entrance at the China International Import Expo, signaling more than luxury with a vintage Rolls-Royce Phantom II on center stage in the Automobile and Smart Mobility Exhibition Area. The display emphasizes craft, storytelling and The Peninsula's deep roots in China's evolving hospitality landscape as it gears up for Shanghai's big stage.

"We are honored to take part in this year's CIIE," said Gareth Roberts, executive director and chief operating officer of The Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels, parent company of The Peninsula Hotels. He described the event as "incredibly impressive" in both scale and organization.

Participating in the CIIE for the first time, Roberts spoke highly of the expo's role as a high-level platform for China's opening-up and international cooperation. "It's a valuable opportunity to engage with the public and connect with the Chinese market," he said. Roberts also expressed confidence in China's continued growth and noted that the group has the intention of participating in future editions of the CIIE with a dedicated booth of its own.

With the theme of "mobility," the automobile exhibition area brought together 11 classic cars from around the world for the first time, showcasing the history and craftsmanship of the automotive industry. The Peninsula's display of the 1929 Phantom II was among the highlights.

Introduced in 1929, the Rolls-Royce Phantom II, known by its chassis number 24EX, is a rare left-hand-drive version that marked an important step in the development of the Phantom series. Originally built as an experimental chassis, it was later fitted with a distinctive Sedanca de Ville body by French coachbuilder Fernandez et Darrin in 1931. After the expo, the car will remain on display at The Peninsula Shanghai, allowing the public to appreciate its craftsmanship up close.

"The display of the 1929 Phantom II is both a tribute to classic automotive culture and an expression of the Peninsula's dedication to hospitality and craftsmanship," Roberts said during an interview with China.org.cn on Wednesday.

He noted the Peninsula's long-standing relationship with Rolls-Royce has become an iconic part of its identity. "We've always had a deep connection with classic cars. Through this exhibition, we hope guests will better understand what defines the Peninsula brand — a commitment to quality, creativity, and attention to detail."

According to Roberts, the hotel group now operates more than 40 Rolls-Royce vehicles worldwide, offering airport transfers, city tours and wedding services for guests.

The Peninsula Hotels' relationship with China dates back nearly a century. The Peninsula Hong Kong opened in 1928, followed by The Peninsula Beijing in 1989 and The Peninsula Shanghai in 2009. Roberts said the group will continue to invest in its existing properties while exploring new opportunities for collaboration.

In recent years, The Peninsula Hotels has been expanding through cultural and creative collaborations in China. For example, its "Art in Resonance" program commissions original works from international and Chinese artists, including a recent partnership with Shanghai-based artist Lin Fanglu in collaboration with the Victoria and Albert Museum. "We're not just displaying art — we're commissioning it to help nurture talent and enrich the guest experience," he said.

Roberts also highlighted rising Chinese consumer interest in storytelling and design-driven hospitality. The recent success of a Shanghai collaboration featuring Miffy-themed desserts that connected the brand with younger audiences is a perfect example. "I hope visitors see our dedication to quality, beauty, and sophistication—the essence of a Peninsula experience," he said.
